Sydney's Northern Beaches |
|
|
One of the most picturesque beaches on Sydneys Northern Beaches is Bilgola Beach, just north of Newport, a twisting road called, appropriately, The Serpentine, is the only way to reach it.
Snuggled into the crook of Bilgola's sub-tropical rainforest, at the bottom of a pretty gully covered in Cabbage Tree Palms the beach. Bilgola is patrolled by lifeguards in the summer and has one of the cleaner ocean pools at the southern end. There are toilets and showers at the pool and the surf club.
As with most Sydney beaches, both ends of the beach can be treacherous and swimmers and surfers are at risk from rips. The safest swimming can be found between the red-and-yellow SLSA flags.
Bilgola is an Aboriginal word thought to mean swirling waters. Bilgola Plateau crowns the peninsula rising above the ocean beach to 169 metres. Bilgola lies between Newport to the south and Avalon and Clareville to the north.
