Located on Sydneys most northern extremity, Palm Beach is home to countless millionaires, film people and artists. Here the peninsula flattens into a long, sandy Beach before climbing to a dramatic full stop at Barrenjoey Head.
A lighthouse perches picturesquely on the top of Barrenjoey ('baby kangaroo'). This 1881 structure stands 113 m above the ocean, but it's the stupendous view across Broken Bay and Lion Island that is the real reward should you put in the 20 minutes needed to climb to it.
Palm Beach leads a double life as "Summer Bay" in the famous Aussie soap Home and Away, with the Barrenjoey Lighthouse and headland regularly in shot.
Palm Beach, boasts a fine stretch of ocean beach, which is great for surfing and fishing, there are many grassed areas for picnics. Palm Beach Shops has many attractions from stylish Cafes and restaurants to many specialist shops.
Palm Beach was named after the Cabbage Tree palms Livistona australis. Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club established in 1921. |
