Avalon North Shopping Centre
Sydney's Northern Beaches
North Avalon's surf culture is alive and well. Fewer families and sunbathers gather at this end, so you can pretty much guarantee a parking space and some privacy. This is also the end at which SCUBA divers enter the water (the northern end teems with sea-life, 20 metres under). Those who don't dive can snorkel, or go exploring around the rocks. Avalon Beach North is superb for swimming, surfing windsurfing and fishing. A rock swimming pool is located at the southern end of the beach. A shady park area provides refuge from the summer sun, together with picnic facilities. Avalon is home to the few remaining koalas able to survive in an increasingly urban environment, a reminder that there once were many more in Pittwater on Sydney's northern beaches. To get to North Avalon just follow Barrenjoey road further north from Avalon shopping centre, or, if you look across Avalon Beach from its southern headland, you'll see North Avalon. Fewer families and sunbathers gather at this end, so you can pretty much guarantee a parking space and some privacy.
