Sydney's Northern Beaches
Bilgola is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located between Avalon to the north, Newport to the south and Clareville to the west. The main access road connecting the suburbs north to the rest of Sydney is Barrenjoey Road which runs through Hewitt Park along the cliff line which separates Bilgola Plateau to the west, from Bilgola beach to the east. One of the most picturesque beaches on Sydneys Northern Beaches is Bilgola Beach, just north of Newport, a twisting road called, appropriately, The Serpentine, is the only way to reach Bilgola Beach. Bilgola beach is snuggled into the crook of Bilgola's sub-tropical rainforest, at the bottom of a pretty gully covered in Cabbage Tree Palms. Bilgola is patrolled by lifeguards in the summer and has one of the cleaner ocean pools at the southern end. There are toilets and showers at the pool and the surf club.
As with most Sydney beaches, both ends of the beach can be treacherous and swimmers and surfers are at risk from rips. The safest swimming can be found between the red-and-yellow SLSA flags. Bilgola is an Aboriginal word thought to mean swirling waters. Bilgola Plateau crowns the peninsula rising above the ocean beach to 169 metres. Bilgola lies between Newport to the south and Avalon and Clareville to the north. There were plans during the 1960's to build a bridge bypass of this twisting road between the north and south headlands of Bilgola. The Bridge was never built. The only evidence of construction can be seen at the southern end of the road, where a small amount of landfill was added to remove a sharp bend in the road. The bend still remains, with the landfill now providing a small grassy area, with an excellent view of Newport Beach.
